A number of participants were on vacation this week. We hope they are having fun! In addition to starting to build a new robot this week (we are building a scorpion), we revisited the marble tower. We decided not to put the petals on in order to see if it would still work. Here are our results (copy and paste link into browser):
Participants had the chance to play with the "Come Back Can." This is relatively easy to make, but there is some danger involved (cutting), so participants did not make their own. Parents will be given instructions on how to build their own, if they would like their own "Come Back Can." We continued to program the robot today. We made a new "arm" to pick up the blue ring, and some new participants were able to program the robot. Here is the link to the video (copy and paste into browser):
Participants had the opportunity to make "Silly Putty." Most took advantage of the opportunity. Jeanette helped with this project. Participants chose the color they wanted and proceeded. We did more programming and discussed using sensors. We also discussed the possibility of using a different robot design. Some students decided to work on another design, while others programmed. Here is the link to a video showing the results of their programming (you may need to copy and paste into your browser):
No 9:30 am session today. Participants coming to 5:00pm session should be ready to learn more about programming our robot. Other robot designs may be considered. Here are links to some videos from the Smart Move season:
Thanks to those who came to the session. We watched some videos to learn how we could earn points on the "Smart Move" field. We had success at the marble tower, and some participants made Cartesian divers. We learned a science lesson on pressure, built our first robot, and programmed it to go forward and backward. Students were given a handout containing pictures of Technic pieces so they could learn their names. As a reminder, there is no session at 9:30am next week. Please come to the 5:00pm session, or we'll see you in 2 weeks! Feel free to check out YouTube videos on "FLL Smart Move" to learn more.
9:30am and 5:00pm gatherings
Participants assembled parts for the field. They started to learn the names of pieces, and they tried to assemble a marble tower.
